Nose Reshaping Surgery - Benefits, Process and Aftercare

Most people who get rhinoplasty have been thinking about it for years. It’s rarely a spontaneous decision. Something about the nose has bothered them since school, or breathing has been a struggle nobody else notices. At some point they stop wondering and start asking real questions.

Nose Surgery Explained

A rhinoplasty surgery modifies the shape, size, or structure of your nose. It all boils down to how the patient sees their problem. Maybe there is a hump on their nasal bridge. Or maybe there is a deviated septum due to a previous nose injury. Whatever the case may be, it is something that needs to be fixed.

A good surgeon looks at your whole face, not just your nose in isolation. Proportion matters more than following some template of what a nose should look like. The goal is a nose that fits you, not one that looks obviously done.

The Benefits Beyond Appearance

The cosmetic aspect is pretty straightforward. The nose is situated at the center of your face, so any alteration affects your entire facial appearance.

However, the functional improvements often fly under the radar. If your breathing was being hindered by a septal deviation or a collapsed valve, surgery will affect your sleep quality, your physical activities, and how you handle allergy season. Many patients decide to go under the knife for cosmetic reasons, and end up being able to breathe right for the first time ever.

There’s also that aspect that isn’t advertised in any brochures. Being self-conscious about your appearance is draining, manifesting in photographs you don’t want to be in, angles you need to avoid, ways you need to hold your head in a conversation. And that’s got some value, too.

The Process

It begins with the consultation process. The surgeon inspects your nose both internally and externally, assesses your breathing function, and discusses what is possible within the limits of your facial structure and skin type. Pictures are very helpful, along with your specific concerns.

The first procedure of doing the surgery involves open rhinoplasty, wherein a small cut will be done on the columella, which is the strip that connects your nostrils, as well as internally. This procedure offers more visualization to the surgeon, making it easier to do complex surgeries.

This operation takes one to three hours, according to how complex the procedure is. General anesthesia is used for this operation. After that, a splint is placed to safeguard everything during the healing process.

Aftercare and Recovery

The most difficult week comes first. You’ll be breathing through your mouth, sleeping at an angle, and feeling worse than you thought you would. It is normal to have bruises around the eyes, despite how scary they look. There will be no bending, no lifting, and no nose-blowing.

The splint comes off around day five to seven. Your nose will still be swollen and won’t look like the result you’re waiting for. This is where people panic, but there is no need to.

Most people take a week off work, sometimes two. Bruising fades within two weeks. By four weeks you look normal to everyone else. Glasses are the annoying part – they can’t rest on your nose for weeks, so tape them to your forehead or switch to contacts.

Skip the gym for six weeks. Skip contact sports longer. Wear sunscreen religiously, because healing skin burns easily and sun exposure can affect scarring.

When You’ll See Results

At six months you’re mostly there. Full results take a year, sometimes eighteen months if you have thick skin or the tip needed significant work. The final bit of swelling will be hard to notice on a daily basis, but when compared in photographs taken six months apart, the change will become clear.

Rhinoplasty surgery will not be difficult because of the lack of pain, or any discomfort after the procedure. Patience is the hardest thing about having your nose done. The nose changes at one week are different from the one-month result and even more different from the end result.
