The implants are too high, the implants are firm and certainly not what you were expecting. Don’t worry though, everything is fine. This is all part of the game.

Why They Look Off at First

Right after surgery, implants sit high on your chest and look tight and round. There’s even a name for it: “riding high.” It happens because your chest muscles and tissues are swollen and tense from the procedure. The implants simply haven’t had time to settle yet.

The firmness is normal too. Between the swelling and tissues that haven’t stretched around the implants yet, everything feels tighter than it will later. None of this is your final result.

Aftermath of Breat Implant Surgery

Implants go through what’s called “drop and fluff.” Over the weeks after surgery, they gradually drop into a lower, more natural position while the lower part of the breast fills out and softens. That’s what gives you the natural shape you’re waiting for.

How long it takes depends on a few things. Placement matters most. Implants under the muscle take longer to settle than ones over it, because the muscle has to relax around them. Size matters too. Bigger implants and tighter skin usually mean a longer wait.

How long does it take for breast implants to drop

The first two weeks, swelling peaks and the implants stay high and firm. By weeks three and four, swelling starts coming down and the implants begin shifting lower.

Around six to eight weeks, most of the obvious change has happened. The implants have dropped noticeably, the breasts feel softer, and things look far more natural than they did early on.

By three months, most women are happy with how they look and feel. The shape is close to final. Full settling, especially for under-the-muscle placement, can take up to six months, sometimes a bit more. That last stretch is subtle softening you might not even notice day to day.

What Affects the Speed

Placement under versus over the muscle is the biggest factor. Size and implant type play a part. So does your skin elasticity and how much natural tissue you started with.

Following your surgeon’s instructions genuinely helps. Wearing the support bra as advised, taking it easy early on, and in some cases doing recommended massage all help things along. Some surgeons suggest massage or a support band to help implants drop, others don’t. Just do whatever yours tells you.

When to Wait and When to Call

A bit of early unevenness is normal. One implant often drops faster than the other, so they can look uneven for a while. This usually sorts itself out as both settle.

That said, if something feels genuinely wrong, bad pain, hardness that’s getting worse instead of better, or one breast looking dramatically different well into recovery, call your surgeon. There’s a difference between normal settling and an actual problem, and they’d rather hear from you than have you sitting at home worrying.

The Bottom Line

Implants don’t look their best right away, and that’s completely normal. Give it time. Most women see natural-looking results by three months, with full settling by around six. What you see in the first few weeks isn’t the finished product, so don’t judge it too early. The soft, natural shape you’re after is coming. It just takes a little while to get there.

At Creas Cosmetic Surgery, our Specialist Breast Implant Surgeons guide you through every stage of healing so you know exactly what to expect and when.

The breast augmentation procedure happens and suddenly a week goes by and here you are staring at yourself in the mirror wondering what you’ve gotten yourself into.
